Our thriving music department offers many course opportunities!

Beginner Band 8-12

​If you want to begin understanding musical language in a fun setting, then this course is for you! Students do not need any musical experience and will be taught the fundamentals of reading music notation and playing a musical instrument. 


Band 8 - Advanced 

Prerequisite: at least 1 year of band experience

Continue your musical development in a fun setting! Students wishing to take this course must have one to two years of band experience. This course is for students of intermediate playing ability who have knowledge of the basic rudiments of music. Students will develop an understanding and appreciation for a variety of musical styles, contribute to the community's rich musical life, and perform music demonstrating mastery of relevant technical and musical skills.


Intermediate Concert Band 9

Prerequisite: For grade 9's, at least 1 year of band experience

This course builds upon previous musical knowledge and is generally for students in grade nine. Students will develop an understanding and appreciation for a variety of musical styles, contribute to the community’s rich musical life, and perform music demonstrating mastery of relevant technical and musical skills. 


Senior Concert Band 10/11/12

Prerequisite: For senior players with experience 

The course is designed for students of advanced playing ability who also have thorough knowledge of upper level music rudiments. Students will develop an understanding and appreciation for a variety of musical styles, contribute to the community's rich musical life, and perform music demonstrating mastery of relevant technical and musical skill.


Jazz Band

Prerequisite:   Teacher’s permission only, musical experience required

Do you like jazz? This is a high-performance, enrichment course for instrumentalists. It is designed to introduce students to concepts of commercial musical styles including swing, jazz, rock, Latin, Dixieland, and jazz ballads. Students will also be encouraged to develop their improvisation skills (creating solos over chord progressions). Students should be registered in concert band and must have teachers permission to register for the course. Exceptions will be made for guitar, bass guitar, and piano players with the teacher's permission only. ​This course is a ninth course in the time table and runs outside of regular school hours, two early mornings per week.


Concert Choir

Choir 8-12

Choir students will have an opportunity to explore singing in a variety of musical styles. Basic music reading skills will be taught with the purpose of moving from unison-style singing with accompaniment to three and four-part singing A cappella or with a rhythm section.  Music students will also learn to develop an appreciation for different musical styles and cultures and contribute to the community's rich musical life. Students will demonstrate competency in various choral techniques, learn correct enunciation and diction, be able to identify and understand musical symbols and technical terms, and learn to display competency in their application (voice only).
